Clarion’s sale to Blackstone is confirmed

A new British private equity advisory boutique has arranged its first deal only four months after its launch by helping to seal the £600m buyout of an exhibitions organiser by Blackstone in a deal that the US private equity group is due to announce on Monday. Clarion Events, which was spun out of Earl’s Court and Olympia in 2004, has since passed through a series of private equity hands.

Blackstone underlined the fierce competition between private equity groups for attractive assets by pre-empting the second round of an auction for Clarion by submitting a knockout bid to its owners Providence Equity Partners. Rival bidders included Cinven, the UK buyout firm, and Xio, the Chinese investment company.
