Why the decline of digital newsstands could be good for publishers

Digital newsstands such as Apple’s were touted as a way to get consumers reading and, more importantly paying, for digital versions of print media on mobile devices. But given their failure to take off, could these attempts to fence off publisher content have actually done more damage to an industry trying to work out exactly where it fits into a much broader digital market?
